New vehicles are regulated under the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, also known as CAFE. Although these standards have significantly improved gas mileage over time, it is debatable whether they have also been effective at lowering carbon emissions. Are fuel economy regulations the best tool to reduce pollution? What are some of the hidden costs of these policies and how do they affect consumer behavior?
